Guwahati, August 28: The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, expressed his sorrow over the passing of BSF constable Rajib Nunia, who tragically lost his life while performing his duties in Jammu.
Rajib Nunia, hailing from Dayapur in the Cachar district, was on duty in the Akhnoor region when a watchtower collapsed on him during flood operations, leading to his injuries.
The Chief Minister's Office shared a message on social media stating, “Hon’ble CM Dr @himantabiswa expresses condolences for the untimely death of Constable Rajib Nunia of @BSF_India while on duty in Jammu… HCM extends his prayers and thoughts to the bereaved family during this difficult time.”
Having joined the BSF just two months prior, Nunia was stationed in Jammu at the time of the incident.
IAF's Rescue Operations Amid Floods
In response to the flooding, the Indian Air Force (IAF) deployed six helicopters on Wednesday for rescue and relief efforts in the affected regions of Jammu and northern Punjab.
Officials reported that 38 army personnel and 10 BSF jawans were successfully rescued from Dera Baba Nanak town in Gurdaspur.
According to officials, “Five Mi-17 helicopters and one Chinook helicopter were quickly mobilized from nearby bases in the northern sector to maximize rescue operations. Additional helicopters are on standby.”
In a separate operation, 12 army personnel and 11 BSF jawans, including three female constables, were airlifted from the flooded areas of Akhnoor.
Earlier, an IAF C-130 transport aircraft arrived in Jammu carrying essential relief supplies and a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team.
The death toll in the rain-affected regions of Jammu and Kashmir has risen to 41, with 34 fatalities reported from a landslide near Vaishno Devi, although a temporary break in the rain has allowed rescue efforts to progress.
